UK Visa Refused: Read Your Decision and Next Steps

Read the decision and any appeal or review deadline before paying for another application. Document preparation is separate from advice on legal remedies.

Rules and sources checked: 5 November 2026. General information; confirm the rules for your application date.

Responding to a refusal

Read the refusal letter in full and keep the date you received it. Match each reason to the specific evidence and rule identified. Do not assume there is an automatic appeal, that every refusal has the same remedy, or that paying for a fresh application is always the best next step.

Visitor applications normally have no appeal or administrative review on ordinary visitor grounds; a decision involving a human-rights claim may differ. Student and Skilled Worker refusals may qualify for administrative review. Family refusals may carry an appeal right. Your decision letter controls the available procedure and deadline.

Answer every application question truthfully, including immigration history where requested. A refusal is not automatically a ban, but deception and other suitability grounds can have serious consequences. Do not use invented documents, temporary funds presented misleadingly or explanations that contradict your evidence.

There is no verified Thailand-specific ranking of refusal reasons on this website. Financial evidence, genuine-visitor concerns, relationship evidence and document requirements matter in different ways on different routes. An administrative preparation service cannot decide your eligibility, predict a result or replace regulated advice about an appeal or review.

Government refunds and refused applications

A refused visa application does not normally produce a refund of the application fee. If you cancel, whether that fee is refunded depends on how far processing has progressed and how you proved your identity. The IHS is different: it is normally refunded in full if the application is refused or withdrawn, usually automatically within 6 weeks of the decision.

VFS optional-service charges have VFS’s own cancellation terms. Our service fee is separate; see the written quote and our refund policy. Paying for preparation or priority processing never guarantees approval.

If refused, read the decision letter before making another application. It states whether you have a right of appeal or administrative review and the deadline. An overseas appeal, where available, is normally due within 28 days of receiving the decision. An eligible overseas administrative review is normally requested within 28 days and costs £80. A new application can affect a pending review. Get qualified advice promptly on which remedy applies.

Visitor finances: no fixed bank balance

UKVI does not publish a universal minimum bank balance for a Standard Visitor visa. Show that the proposed trip is affordable in your circumstances, including travel, accommodation, daily spending and continuing commitments at home. There is no official rule that every Thai applicant must show ฿100,000 or six months of bank statements.

Useful evidence shows the funds you can access and their source. Explain large or unusual deposits and provide evidence where appropriate. Your declared income, work, sponsor arrangements and trip budget should be consistent. Owning property is not compulsory, and a low balance is not a standalone formula for refusal.

A third party may fund accommodation or costs if the relationship is genuine and they can and will support you under the visitor rules. Explain which costs they cover and provide appropriate evidence of their finances and status. A sponsor’s high balance does not remove the requirement that you are a genuine visitor.

Do not buy non-refundable flights to strengthen an application. GOV.UK says flight and hotel bookings are generally not useful supporting evidence for a visit application, except where relevant to transit. Describe your real intended plans and follow the document instructions for your situation.

Thai documents and English translations

For documents not in English or Welsh, provide a full translation that UKVI can independently verify. The translation should confirm that it is accurate, give the date, and include the translator’s full name, signature and contact details. Include all relevant pages, stamps, annotations and reverse sides; submit the original-language document with its translation as instructed.

Use the passport spelling of names consistently and explain genuine differences with the relevant name-change or civil records. Do not alter an original document to make it match. A translation, notarisation and legalisation are different services: check the actual application instructions before paying for additional certification. A document written in English by its issuing authority may not need a separate translation, but it must still contain the required evidence.
