UK Standard Visitor Visa Document Checklist from Thailand (2026)

A visitor evidence checklist based on what the application needs to establish, without invented six-month statement or passport-validity rules.

Rules and sources checked: 5 November 2026. General information; confirm the rules for your application date.

A practical evidence checklist

  • A current passport or travel document, valid for the whole visit.
  • A truthful explanation of the purpose, intended dates, accommodation and expected cost.
  • Financial records showing accessible funds and their source, with explanations for unusual transactions where relevant.
  • Evidence of work, study, family or other circumstances relevant to your intention to leave.
  • If someone hosts or pays: their invitation, relationship to you, what they cover, and relevant financial or status evidence.
  • For a child: the required consent and care/travel arrangements.
  • Full verifiable translations for relevant documents not in English or Welsh.

This is a preparation guide, not a mandatory list for every applicant. Follow your application checklist and the supporting-document guide. More paperwork is not automatically better: use relevant, consistent evidence and keep a copy of what you submit. Attend biometrics or use the identity-check method specified by UKVI.

Visitor finances: no fixed bank balance

UKVI does not publish a universal minimum bank balance for a Standard Visitor visa. Show that the proposed trip is affordable in your circumstances, including travel, accommodation, daily spending and continuing commitments at home. There is no official rule that every Thai applicant must show ฿100,000 or six months of bank statements.

Useful evidence shows the funds you can access and their source. Explain large or unusual deposits and provide evidence where appropriate. Your declared income, work, sponsor arrangements and trip budget should be consistent. Owning property is not compulsory, and a low balance is not a standalone formula for refusal.

A third party may fund accommodation or costs if the relationship is genuine and they can and will support you under the visitor rules. Explain which costs they cover and provide appropriate evidence of their finances and status. A sponsor’s high balance does not remove the requirement that you are a genuine visitor.

Do not buy non-refundable flights to strengthen an application. GOV.UK says flight and hotel bookings are generally not useful supporting evidence for a visit application, except where relevant to transit. Describe your real intended plans and follow the document instructions for your situation.

Thai documents and English translations

For documents not in English or Welsh, provide a full translation that UKVI can independently verify. The translation should confirm that it is accurate, give the date, and include the translator’s full name, signature and contact details. Include all relevant pages, stamps, annotations and reverse sides; submit the original-language document with its translation as instructed.

Use the passport spelling of names consistently and explain genuine differences with the relevant name-change or civil records. Do not alter an original document to make it match. A translation, notarisation and legalisation are different services: check the actual application instructions before paying for additional certification. A document written in English by its issuing authority may not need a separate translation, but it must still contain the required evidence.

What a Standard Visitor visa permits

A Thai ordinary-passport holder normally needs a visa for a UK visit. A Standard Visitor visa can cover tourism, visiting relatives and friends, and specified business, study or other permitted activities. It normally permits a stay of up to 6 months per visit. A 2-, 5- or 10-year visitor visa does not allow continuous residence for that whole period.

You must be a genuine visitor, leave at the end of your visit and have enough funds for the trip without working unlawfully or accessing public funds. You cannot use successive visits to make the UK your main home. Work, including unpaid work for a UK business, is generally prohibited except for activities expressly permitted by the rules.

Do not use a Standard Visitor visa to marry, enter a civil partnership or give notice, apart from the specific conversion exception. A Marriage Visitor visa is normally for a ceremony followed by departure; the family fiancé(e) route is for eligible people intending to marry and remain. Your passport must be valid throughout your stay, rather than meet a blanket extra 6-month UK validity rule.

Applying and waiting for a decision

Start with the relevant GOV.UK application. If instructed to attend a visa application centre, book through the official VFS UK-in-Thailand portal after completing the online application and payment steps. VFS collects biometrics and documents; UKVI decides the application. Paid lounge, scanning or appointment services do not improve eligibility or the chance of approval.

Published standard times for applications outside the UK are usually 3 weeks for Visitor, Student and Skilled Worker applications, and 12 weeks for partner, parent, child and adult-dependent-relative family applications. The clock starts after the required identity/biometric step and submission, not when you first start filling in a form. These are service standards, not guarantees; additional checks can take longer.

Where offered, Priority costs £500 and normally targets 5 working days for most visas or 30 working days for family applications from outside the UK. Super Priority costs £1,000 and usually targets the next working day, with weekend and holiday adjustments. Eligibility and availability depend on the route and booking system. Confirm the actual option before relying on it and do not book travel until you have the decision.
